macOS Mojave, 2017 MacBook Pro 13" Viscosity 1.8.6 (1546).

I have tied two different OpenVPN config files both have exhibited the the same situation upon trying to import from file.

Viscosity will successfully import the configs. The problem is it crashes/looses window focus upon doing the import. Your left with a Viscosity window on top of all other windows that is completely un-responsive. I had to open up terminal and so a command line reboot. As the GUI will not function. Upon reboot the new profile has been imported and is completely functional.

Please fix the window/focus issue.

Hi MrLimoAK,

Thanks for the report. We're not aware of any issues with the import process, and we've been unable to replicate any issues during testing. Can you confirm you're running the latest version of macOS 10.14 (10.14.6)? What was the message in the window stuck on top?

Normally when we get reports of UI weirdness like this it's often caused by enterprise management software (which attempt to inject themselves into Viscosity's process). If this is a work laptop managed by your IT department you may want to also get in touch with them to check whether there are any updates available to any management software they may use as well.

Thanks,
James

Fully Updated 10.14.6 we use JAMF Management. No message of any type other than you can't select cancel to close the file browser window or Viscosity's list of configuration files. You get an error click sound when trying to click cancel on file/and Viscosity's list of configurations. Looses window focus. The import actually takes place. You have to use Terminal to force reboot the machine to re-gain control. Force quit show all apps functional.

Hi MrLimoAK,

The open dialog is run in a seperate sandboxed process by macOS and isn't directly under Viscosity's control. From your description it sounds like it is freezing after returning the selected file information to Viscosity.

While it's frozen, try opening the Activity Monitor application and look for a process named something like "com.apple.appkit.xpc.openAndSavePanelService". You can try force-quitting this process to see if control is returned to Viscosity.

We've asked around and investigated the issue further, and I'm afraid this isn't a bug in Viscosity itself, but a bug in macOS 10.14. It can apparently be caused by faulty QuickLook plugins, so it may be worth checking what plugins are present on that machine (many apps bundle one or more). There have also been reports of Dropbox's Finder integration causing the same issue, so it may also be worth temporarily disabling or uninstalling that if installed and seeing whether the issue persists.

I would also suggest checking for any software that could interfere with macOS's sandboxed open/save panel service. This would typically be low-level security software (like AntiVirus software).

Finally, it looks like users running into the same issue with different apps reported that it was resolved after updating to macOS 10.15, so you may like to give that a try. Alternatively double-clicking on configuration files to import them into Viscosity should avoid the need for the macOS open dialog.

Cheers,
James
