I have been a many year user of Viscosity on both macOS and Windows. I have noticed eventual crash of Mac PowerBook Pro (both m1 and m3) macOS Sonoma when using one or more TAP connections — TUN connections seem to be unaffected. Tunnel appears to be fully functional prior to delayed crash of MacBook Pro. Currently using macOS Sonoma 14.1.2 with Viscosity 1.11b7 (1665), but issue has persisted across multiple versions of Sonoma and Viscosity on two different MacBook Pros connecting to different OpenVPN servers hosted on Asus routers.

Anyone else see this? If so, any resolution? Thanks in advance.

Hi visortgw,

Viscosity does not install or bundle any kernel extensions. If something causing macOS to crash (kernel panic) it is highly unlikely to be Viscosity caused as it does not run any code at that level in the macOS kernel. Older versions of Viscosity did use kernel extensions, however this hasn't been the case for several years now.

Generally in instances where macOS is crashing, where it has definitely been linked to connecting or disconnecting a VPN connection, it's typically the result of something else reacting to the network change. For example, other software which does run kernel level code may be reacting to the new VPN network interface in some way, and causing the crash. Common culprits are endpoint security software, antivirus software, firewall tools, and device drivers. Occasionally it can also be a bug in macOS, which should be reported to Apple via Feedback Assistant.

More information about the cause of the kernel panic should be available as a Diagnostic Report in the Console application:

Cheers,
James

I will try TAP connections again (I temporarily have been using only TUN connections with no crashes), and I will check for Diagnostic Reports if/when a crash occurs. FYI, the crash is not instantaneous when the VPN connection is established or terminated, but rather several minutes into the VPN session.
